Why It’s More Than Just Irregular Periods

What Is PCOS?

PCOS is a hormonal imbalance where the ovaries produce excess male hormones (androgens). If you’ve heard of PCOS, you may think it’s just about irregular periods. But polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects far more than your cycle it is a metabolic disease that can affect your fertility and overall health.

Common Symptoms

•   Irregular periods or no periods at all

•   Acne and oily skin

•   Excess hair growth (face, chest, back)

•   Thinning scalp hair

•   Weight gain with difficulty losing weight

•   Difficulty conceiving

•   Mood changes

Why It Matters

PCOS is marked by insulin resistance which can increase the risk of diabetes. Increased abdominal fat can increase the risk of heart disease. Lastly, irregular periods which mean lack of consistent ovulation (egg release), can put you at risk for cancer of the uterus.

What You Can Do

1. Track your cycles and symptoms. Apps are helpful.
2. Avoid overly processed foods and simple carbohydrates.
3. Cardiovascular exercise will improve insulin sensitivity

4. Discuss medications with your doctor.
5. Prioritize mental health — anxiety and depression are more common with PCOS.

6. If you are trying to conceive, don’t wait to see a specialist.
